Olivier Giroud injury update after Chelsea striker misses Champions League game versus Lille

Olivier Giroud rolled an ankle in training last week, causing him to miss Chelsea's 3-1 defeat away to Everton on Saturday afternoon and tonight's Champions League Group H decided against Lille.

The France striker started the 1-0 defeat against West Ham at Stamford Bridge ten days ago and was an unused substitute in the win over Aston Villa last Wednesday.

However, football.london has been told that he hurt his ankle before the trip to Goodison Park. It is unclear how severe the injury is and how long the 33-year-old will be out for.

Giroud, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has found opportunities hard to come by this season owing to Tammy Abraham's excellent form up front for Frank Lampard's side.

He may try to leave the club when the transfer window opens next month having already placed on record his need for minutes with the European Championship to come in June.

Didier Deschamps, the France head coach, is keen for Giroud to be part of his plans but has also warned that he needs more time on the pitch if he is to make the 23-man squad.

Lampard has previously promised that the former Arsenal man would get opportunities but, having failed to impress against West Ham, he has fallen down the pecking order and is third choice behind Michy Batshuayi.

With the club's transfer ban lifted, the chances of Giroud departing in January are substantially greater as Chelsea would likely seek to find a reinforcement if he moves on.
