Olivier Giroud drops major hint over Chelsea exit as he discusses his future

Olivier Giroud has hinted that he would like to play in the United States when his Chelsea contract expires.

The France international has been at Stamford Bridge for just over 18 months now, joining from London rivals Arsenal in the 2018 January transfer window and hasn't quite nailed down the centre-forward position under three different head coaches.

That's not to say Giroud's contributions have been ignored.

Under Antonio Conte he helped the Blues beat Manchester United in the 2017 FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium and broke Arsenal fans' hearts in last season's Europa League final, breaking the deadlock in Baku as Maurizio Sarri claimed the first trophy of his managerial career.

Giroud also scored the first competitive goal of Frank Lampard's reign as head coach, although Tammy Abraham has been given the nod to lead the line in all but one Premier League game so far this season.

At 32 years-of-age there's the argument that Giroud doesn't have much gas left in the tank and he has as claimed that he would be open to leaving the club in the near future.

Luckily for Chelsea fans,  they don't have to worry about an imminent exit from west London for the striker.

"The MLS for my family, my children who speak English, it's interesting," Giroud told RMC Sport .

"In a year? In two years? I do not know when. But of course after that I will be open to a final challenge."

Prior to signing a contract extension at Stamford Bridge back in May, it appeared that the only way Giroud was going to extend his stay in the capital was with the promise of more first-team football.

The most important thing for me is to enjoy the game, be happy on the pitch and to have more minutes," he said on April 17, 2019. "I really want to play more.

"Trust me, I'm very frustrated when I'm not on the pitch, but I just don't want to show it.

"When you are a competitor, when you've been through difficulties all through your career, you need to keep that frustration inside you and transform it into positive energy on the pitch.

"Trust me, though, I'm not happy to play the second role. That's why I said, next year, I will need to have a more important role to play in the team."

Whilst the 2019/20 is still in its infancy, it remains to be seen if Giroud would be open to leaving Chelsea in January if he's unable to dislodge Abraham in attack.
