Oliver Skipp's first words on new Tottenham contract, Jose Mourinho and what he's improving on

Oliver Skipp has signed a new contract at Tottenham to commit his future to the club.

With his current deal set to expire at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, Spurs have moved to ensure he remains at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2024.

Skipp has made a total of nine appearances for the Lilywhites this season and he has made quite an impression on Jose Mourinho in his short time at the club.

The head coach rates the midfielder extremely highly and his new contract signals that he is part of the 57-year-old's plans for the future in N17.

"Being at the club since I was very young, it is nice to extend my contract here," he told Spurs TV about his new contract. "Hopefully now I can push on and see what the future holds.

"Hopefully I can gain more and more appearances. It shows the manager trusts me and the club have plans for me going forward."

Making his debut for Spurs in the Carabao Cup game against West Ham in October 2018, Skipp actually got his first taste of game time alongside the club's senior stars on their pre-season tour to the United States a few months earlier.

"It has really flown by," he added. "I look back at that first tour and it seems like yesterday, but I have experienced good things in the first team with the Champions League last year, it has been a difficult season this season for everyone, but it something that I have learned from and hopefully we can use it to push forward for the next seasons."

Making his debut under Mauricio Pochettino, Skipp now has Mourinho to learn from after he replaced the Argentine at the helm back in November.

Given the success the head coach has tasted over the course of his managerial career, he believes that working for Mourinho can only help his game.

"You see what he has done in the game, Champions League wins, Premier League wins, it is something you can learn off and develop your understanding of the game due to his tactical knowledge," admitted Spurs No.29.

"Working under Jose can only be good for me to develop all sides of my game."

Skipp's goal is now to add to his 21 appearances for Spurs and he is doing all he can to ensure that he gets more minutes on the pitch for the club in the future.

"Growing up watching the Premier League demands so I am just trying to be as strong and powerful as possible really helps," said the midfielder.

"You look at all the good teams, everyone is powerful, everyone can run so it is something I am trying to get in my game.

"Learning off the other players in training just watching what they do before a match, how they prepare.

"Also if you are not playing you can do extras in the gym. I have been in the gym working on my weaknesses.

"I just want to finish this season off strong and see what the future holds."
