Oliver Callan jokes about when Ryan Tubridy will return to RTE show after Christmas break

Oliver Callan was filling in for Ryan Tubridy on his RTE Radio One show this morning with the latter still missing since the Christmas break.

Tubs, whose show is a big hit daily at 9am on RTE Radio One, is finally expected back on Wednesday.

Opening his show this morning, comedian Callan said: "I'm filling in today and tomorrow and the 'long fellow' will be back on Wednesday, yes Wednesday."

While in his place, Callan opened the show with some upbeat stories and listed out all the things to look forward to in 2021.

From the Euros to the Lions tour and the talk from Professor Luke O'Neill that Ireland could be back partying and celebrating by the June Bank Holiday weekend.

Comedian Callan added: "It is 2021, fair to say not exactly the bright new dawn that we had expected a month ago.

"But at least we've known for a good fortnight now of the pickle that we find ourselves in now.

"There are many gurus out there that will tell you don't read the news, don't look at the news, but I don't think doing the ostrich will do you much good either.

"I'm looking at all the papers this morning and it is dispiriting but it is important to know what's going on."
