Oli McBurnie sends Scotland fans into meltdown as he’s caught on camera making shock 'claim'

Oli McBurnie is at the centre of a social media storm after fans accused the striker of disrespecting Scotland on the day he was announced in Steve Clarke's Euro 2020 squad.

Sheffield United's £20million striker netted his first goal for his new club at the weekend and has spoken in the past of his love of playing for his country.

But the Leeds-born forward, who has failed to score in seven Scotland caps, has been condemned by supporters for seemingly talking down his country during footage that's emerged on social media.

Video from Sheffield United TV shows McBurnie and fellow team-mates standing outside the club's dressing room.

The former Swansea striker is involved in a conversation with former Rangers starlet John Fleck and although the voices in the original video are muffled, we've managed to sharpen up the audio to bring the exchange to light.

However, although the pair appear to be discussing Scotland call-ups, the context within which the conversation takes place is not confirmed.

Fellow Scot Fleck asks McBurnie: "Are you going away?"

The 23-year-old responds, "I hope not" before asking Fleck if he’s injured. The reply is inaudible.

But McBurnie, with a puzzled look, then asks Fleck: "You going to leave me to go on my own?"

The words "it’s sh**e" are then heard but it is unclear who has said it.

The conversation has created a storm on social media with Scotland fans enraged by McBurnie’s apparent comments.

@ScottMackenzie0 said: "I would rather go to the international games with one less player than take McBurnie after this. Didn't necessarily rate him as a player, but yet another "pro" to make a mockery of playing for the National team. Hope Clarke sees this."

@Beardster12 said: "Hope you declined the call up then @oli_mcburnie Surely you have the balls to back up what you really think?"

@ChrisMurray18 wrote: "To be fair to the boy he's in agreement with just about everyone else in Scotland, no one wants Oli McBurnie playing for the national team."

@OwenJamesBrown said: "Oli McBurnie falling on his sword to force Steve Clarke to call Leigh Griffiths. Good guy."

@RyanCapperauld said: "So it appears McBurnie hopes he isn’t called up and thinks playing for Scotland is s***e then.... Simple solution then. Don’t play. Give your spot to someone who actually wants to play for their country."

@Jamertonia added: "The guy should be thankful he is getting a game for Scotland at all as he is abysmal. Zero goals in seven caps says it all."

However, @TheRogue87 believes it's a storm in a teacup as he said: "I think there is more being made of this than there should be. If anything McBurnie shouldn't be anywhere near the team cause he's murder but that's neither here nor there."

A source told Record Sport: "This is the first time Oli has been involved in a Steve Clarke squad as he was injured for the manager’s first double-header.

"From the moment he arrived on the international scene Oli has been a model pro with an exemplary attitude.

"He seemed to get off on the wrong foot through no fault of his own when he was called up for the U19s instead of Jack Harper, who was at that point on Real Madrid’s books. Now Oli is a Premier League striker."

The Scottish FA have been contacted for comment.
