Oli McBurnie reveals family's rage at Scotland video nasty as striker opens up on 'stupid' outburst

Oli McBurnie has revealed that his Scottish family were RAGING at the video nasty that threatened to ruin his international career.

The striker was forced to apologise to gaffer Steve Clarke and the national squad after a clip emerged from the Sheffield United tunnel where he appeared to say the Scotland set-up was s***e.

McBurnie claims his words were completely taken out of context – but accepts that he was in the wrong even joking about it.

And speaking for the first time about the incident, the 23-year-old admits his dad Neil, as well his family from Glasgow and the Highlands, were angry with him.

McBurnie said: “It’s been a tough couple of weeks for me.

“It was stupid to put myself in that position. It was a private conversation in the dressing-room and five seconds was taken out of context.

“No-one heard the rest of the conversation. But nonetheless it looked terrible and it was stupid from me.

“My old man was raging at me. He gave me a clip round the ear for it.

“And as soon as it came out obviously I rang the gaffer and gave him my point of view.

“We had one conversation and that was it cleared.

“The whole family were angry with me, asking why I was saying that. But they know I love being up here and so do the boys in the squad.

“My stupid mouth ran away from me.

“I got down about it because of the backlash. I could see how bad it looks.

“When I put myself out there like I do, it’s easy for people to use it as a stick to beat me with.

“But it’s my own fault, I have to realise where I am, what I can and can’t say.”
