Oli McBurnie mystery as striker named on Sheffield United bench despite Scotland withdrawal

Scotland striker Oli McBurnie has been named on the bench for Sheffield United - despite pulling out of the international set up through injury.

The lanky frontman was named as one of two striker withdrawals from Steve Clarke's squad, along with Dundee United hitman Lawrence Shankland.

His absence was explained as a foot injury by Scotland assistant boss Steven Reid but McBurnie could make an appearance from the bench for his club side this evening.

Yesterday, Reid had said: "He's got an issue with his foot which has obviously not quite healed enough to meet up with us."

But McBurnie is capable of playing for the Premier League outfit in a bounce game against Derby County as they prepare for the new league campaign.

It's not the first time controversy has surrounded McBurnie and the Scotland squad since Clarke replaced Alex McLeish as manager.

He was caught on camera admitted that he didn't want to go on international duty last year in a conversation with Blades team-mate John Fleck.

A line was drawn under it at the time with McBurnie apologising and insisting it was taken out of context.

The 24-year-old has struggled to make an impact with Scotland during his time in the squad.

He’s made nine appearances but is yet to find the target despite his impressive form and goal record at club level.
