In photos, she sported heavy bandages covering her injuries.

Now it has come to light Ms Kurilo is a 53-year-old teacher from Ukraine.

Speaking outside her destroyed home, the teacher said she was “very lucky” to have survived.

She added: “I must have had a guardian angel.”

Ms Kurilo said her home had been “completely destroyed” in the attack.

A devastating series of photos captured the teacher wounded following aistrike damage to an apartment complex outside of Kharkiv.

Those photographs have had the world’s attention.

Her face was among many heartbreaking pictures which have emerged from the war in Ukraine.

Graphic photographs have revealed the wounded staggering through the streets after the Russian invasion.

It comes as the majority of Russian forces advancing on Kyiv remain “more than 50km from the centre of the city”, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

In an intelligence update posted about 3.30pm, the MoD said the Russian armoured forces had “opened a new route of advance towards Kyiv having failed to capture Chernihiv”.

The report said there were “reports of sporadic clashes in the northern suburbs of Kyiv, which we continue to monitor”.
