Oleksandr Usyk's assistant coach Sergey Lapin has hinted that news of a unification bout between the Ukrainian and Tyson Fury could be on the horizon.
Usyk is set to defend his three heavyweight belts against Anthony Joshua later this year, with AJ having activated a rematch clause following his September defeat, while Fury will defend his WBC belt against Dillian Whyte.
Both fighters are widely tipped to secure victories in their upcoming matches, which would leave the door open for the pair to go head-to-head.
Such an occasion would be the biggest in the modern era of boxing, with the winner becoming the first unified heavyweight champion during the four-belt era.
Lapin is among those who is keen to see a fight take place and his comments suggest it's an outcome that is extremely possible.
“In the near future we will find out the date of the Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua rematch. But maybe we'll find out something else interesting," he told MyBettingSites.
”Why not assume such an option as Fury-Usyk? It would be very interesting for boxing fans, a historical event.
“If you remember a year ago, fans were waiting for a fight for the undisputed world champion in the heavyweight division between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua - but literally in a moment, everything changed.
“At this stage, I think everything is possible, everything is constantly changing. The battle for undisputed champion in the heavyweight division is a very cool event that has not been held for more than 20 years."
Both Fury and Usyk are expected to fight in the first quarter of 2022, with a unification bout potentially following later in the year.
