Oleksandr Usyk agreed to 'Andy Ruiz Jr clause' in Anthony Joshua fight contract

Oleksandr Usyk agreed to a rematch clause with Anthony Joshua should the Ukrainian win next weekend, despite the clause not being obligatory.

Joshua will defend his WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles against the undefeated Usyk on September 25.

Usyk's rematch clause is the same one that Andy Ruiz Jr agreed to in 2019 when he stopped Joshua in a shock upset.

Joshua's team immediately triggered the rematch clause in the contract and 'AJ' would go on to win his belts back against Ruiz later that year.

And Usyk's manager, Alex Krassyuk, revealed the rematch clause Joshua's team offered was fair which is why they accepted it.

He told MyBettingSites: “The rematch is something that is not obligatory in the mandatory fight. But we accepted the very fair conditions to agree to it.

“Oleksandr is very confident in his victory over AJ and how he will beat him. So therefore he easily agreed to the second bout because his mindset will be even more favourable after winning the first.

“Now Alex has a huge motivation to get up at 5 am every day and work as hard as he can for he has an objective in front of him.

“After just two bouts at heavyweight, Usyk signed the contract for a multiple belt showdown with the king of the heavyweights.

“But let the best man win in September, and then we will do it again in the rematch."

Usyk is a former unified cruiserweight champion who moved up to heavyweight in 2018 after knocking out Tony Bellew.

The Ukrainian has since won fights against Chazz Withersponn and Derek Chisora, but he faces a big step up in competition against Joshua.

And Krassyuk believes Joshua - who will have a big height and reach advantage over Usyk - is making a mistake as he trims down for the fight.

He continued: "We accept AJ shedding weight as good news because formerly a lot of experts gave his weight as an advantage. Now AJ is reducing his advantage.

"I’m not sure how he’s going to be on the scale and what kind of figure he will show, but he looks slimmer than in any of his previous fights. And that makes me think that AJ wants to present some boxing tactics for Usyk.

"Some people say size never matters. I’ve heard it in many movies. Size can matter sometimes, but boxing skills, boxing intelligence, experience, proper mindset, motivation, incentive; these are smaller things that together create the whole picture.

"Of course, it is an advantage that AJ has on his side, and he has to use it properly to get the victory. But there are some things that Usyk has as advantages and he will definitely be working hard to use them."
