Ole Miss (0-0) vs. Memphis (0-0) Game Preview
Ole Miss knows just how dangerous this Memphis program can be, especially in the Liberty Bowl. The Tigers beat the Rebels in 2015, but that was a bit of an aberration. In the longtime series, Ole Miss is 7-1 in the last eight.
The Rebels are away from the bowl eligibility portion of the SEC sanctions and need this to win with a the SEC season starting up the following week against Arkansas. To get to six wins, this has to be one of them.
Memphis doesn’t have another game against a Power Five program, and this is the big resumé moment. With four straight games to follow against teams that didn’t go bowling last season, expect 5-0 if the Tigers can pull this off.
Why Ole Miss Will Win
Bombs away.
Yes, the Ole Miss offense loses QB Jordan Ta’amu and the loaded NFL receiving corps of DK Metcalf, AJ Brown and DaMarcus Lodge … and the program simply filled in all the gaps.
Throw in Scottie Phillips and the running game into the equation, and the Rebels should be able to move the ball at will.
The Tiger secondary is going to be a problem. There have to be more interceptions, the big plays have to stop coming, and overall, the defense still has to prove it can beat a good offense after not being able to do it last year.
But if you think the Memphis defense is a problem …
Why Memphis Will Win
Ole Miss has to go a long, long way to merely be awful defensively.
The D that finished dead last in the SEC in total and scoring defense was awful against the run, miserable against anyone who tried to throw, and couldn’t generate a pass rush.
Memphis can run, throw, and was/will be decent in pass protection.
The Rebels have a whole lot of experience returning with nine starters back on the defensive side, but this Tiger offense is going to be a machine that hits home run after home run.
On the other side, the Ole Miss offensive line losses three starters who were all a big part of last year’s puzzle – it’ll take a little while to get it all to work again.
What’s Going To Happen
Get ready for a wild and crazy shootout with over 1,000 yards of offense and a whole lot of mood and momentum swings. The SEC talent on Ole Miss will shine through early on, but Memphis will keep on coming, keep on producing, and will go on a late scoring drive to pull off the huge win for the American Athletic Conference.
It might just be a Last Team With The Ball Wins sort of game.
