Ole Gunnar Solskjaer warns David De Gea his Man Utd place at risk after Chelsea howlers

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer warned David De Gea his place is under threat after the Manchester United keeper's blunders cost them an FA Cup final place.

De Gea's high-profile mistakes, which led to goals for Oliver Giroud and Mason Mount, were the latest in an error-strewn season from the previously imperious United No.1

Solskjaer admitted De Gea should have saved Chelsea's second goal and warned the Spaniard he must perform to keep his place – like every other United player.

“Obviously everyone has to perform and everyone, when they perform, has a chance to stake a claim to be in the team,” said Solskjaer.

“David knows he should have saved the second goal, but that's done now. I can't speak for David's confidence, but he's mentally very strong.

"He knows he should save that one 100 times out of 100, but that's football for you. I made the decision to play him and mentally he was ready for it.

"You know Olivier Giroud's movement, you know he goes to the near post and we should defend that better.

“We are a little too late in those situations and the second goal was very avoidable.

“It's hard for a keeper to make amends, apart from David making two or three fantastic saves afterwards.

“David showed in the rest of the game, he made a few good saves, but he knows he should have saved the second one.”

An own goal from skipper Harry Maguire compounded United's misery, with Bruno Fernandes scoring from the spot late on for the Reds.

Victory for Frank Lampard's side means it is an all-London final at Wembley on August 1 between Chelsea and Arsenal.

A jubilant Lampard said: “I can't ask for any more than that. I'm very proud of that performance.

Solskjaer said: "Chelsea had an extra 48 hours, that's just a fact but it's no excuse, I can't use excuses. It is what it is, we would rather have the semi to play than not, I won't make a fuss out of that.

"You know Olivier Giroud's movement, you know he goes to the near post and we should defend that better. We are a little too late in those situations and the second goal was very avoidable.

"There is no time to feel sorry for ourselves, we have two games this week and then the Europa League. We will get our heads ready and our legs ready and go again."
