Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told he may have committed a ‘sackable offence’ by trying to change Jadon Sancho’s role at Manchester United.
The United boss is coming under increasing pressure over his position as manager amid a poor run of results and performances, having been thoroughly outclassed by both Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks.
Speculation continues over who might come in to replace Solskjaer, but for the time being there’s no sign of any change being made at Old Trafford.
The Norwegian will therefore have to look at ways in which he can arrest his side’s slump, and reports have suggested he’s eyeing up a radical change to Sancho’s role.
The England international has struggled since making the move from Borussia Dortmund, and has found himself having to settle for a place on the bench for much of the season so far.
There have been suggestions that Solskjaer has been looking at developing Sancho into a wing-back, having turned to a three-at-the-back system in recent games, and with regular right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka struggling for form himself.
Former Leeds and City defender Danny Mills though has called the move “ridiculous”, and has warned Solskjaer he could be turning up the heat on himself.
“Good luck turning him into a wing-back!” Mills told Football Insider.
“He didn’t play for England too much in the Euros because I don’t think he was reliable enough to track back and do the defensive side of it. Dortmund never played him there.
“You bought a winger who is going to create chances and score goals. Suddenly you’re going to play him at wing-back in an unbelievably leaky defence. It’s like, really?
“That’s almost a sackable offence in itself.
“Shall we put Cristiano Ronaldo at centre-half because he can head a ball? I think Ronaldo can head the ball better than the centre-halves at the moment so should they put him at centre-half?
“It’s more than a little bit ridiculous.”
