Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Dean Henderson to 'rival David de Gea' for Man Utd No.1 spot

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to give Dean Henderson the chance to usurp David de Gea as No 1 at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old has spent consecutive seasons on loan at Sheffield United and regularly impressed.

His performances have convinced Solskjaer that the Englishman could give De Gea a run for his money and, hopefully, see the Spaniard rediscover his form.

De Gea has been United's most consistent performer since joining in 2011, but his displays over the past year have seen him questioned.

The lack of a credible alternative, coupled with the Spaniard signing a lucrative long-term deal recently, has seen him retain his starting berth.

Henderson's presence though could prove to be a plus for the Red Devils with Solskjaer prepared to consider the shot stopper, reports the Athletic .

De Gea made several high profile errors towards the end of last season and showed they weren't fully out of his system with a howler against Watford last month.

Henderson himself hasn't been immune to an error with Blades boss Chris Wilder publicly critical of his mistake that cost them against Liverpool back in September.

On the whole though the academy graduate has impressed and conceded fewer goals than De Gea this season.

It isn't clear whether Henderson would be prepared to play second fiddle to the Spaniard were he to remain at Old Trafford next term meaning another loan move away is plausible.

United are making changes in an effort to see De Gea produce his best form again with Craig Mawson replacing Emiliano Alvarez in the goalkeeping department.

Alvarez's friendly relationship with the United No 1 was thought to be hindering him.
