Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urged to drop Anthony Martial in favour of Mason Greenwood

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been urged to drop Anthony Martial and start youngster Mason Greenwood.

Martial produced a dismal display in Saturday's stalemate with Wolves, without the support of injured strike partner Marcus Rashford.

Greenwood couldn't break the deadlock after coming off the bench, but he has scored as many goals as Martial in his last eight appearances, despite playing considerably less minutes.

Now Match of the Day pundits Ian Wright and Alan Shearer both feel it's time the academy prospect is given a run in the team.

"I’d play him," Wright said on the BBC show. "When you look at how Martial has played in that game, I would play him now, absolutely."

In criticism of Martial, Shearer added: "[He's] got to do better, got to hold the play up better, bring people into the game. Too easily shoved off the ball.

"He’s got to offer more than today’s game."

Solskjaer has leapt to the defence of his frontman, blaming fatigue caused from extra work and running heaped on the Frenchman as a result of Rashford's absence.

But Shearer feels there is more to Martial's form.

"He just looks uninterested," he told the Sun. "I never get the impression he enjoys playing football — which is something I’ve not really come across too much in the game before.

"He has one good game followed by three average ones — he’s a very frustrating player to watch."

The former England striker then echoed Wright's sentiments, and called on Solskjaer to put faith in Greenwood to lead the United attack.

"He’s young, exciting and a natural finisher," Shearer continued. "After watching Martial’s latest performance, let’s be honest, what have they got to lose?"

Greenwood's hopes of nailing down a first-team place will no doubt be impacted by the arrival of Odion Ighalo on loan.

The 30-year-old jetted into Manchester on Sunday after completing his temporary switch from Shanghai Shenhua.

Solskjaer said: "We will give him [Ighalo] time to settle.

"He’s a different type of striker. He’s a proven goalscorer, physical presence.

"It also gives us a chance to rest Mason Greenwood and to rest Anthony Martial at times with so many games coming up."
