Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told win over "bang average" Spurs has just delayed Man Utd sacking

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has only delayed the inevitable of his sacking by overseeing Manchester United ’s 3-0 win over Tottenham, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Solskjaer came into Saturday’s Premier League game under huge pressure following the 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend.

The United boss got the response he was looking for as goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford gave the away side a deserved victory.

By contrast, Tottenham were woeful, failing to muster a single shot on target as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side left the pitch to boos from the stands.

The Mirror understands Nuno’s future as Spurs manager could be under threat, with the club’s hierarchy considering replacing him with fellow Portuguese boss Paulo Fonseca.

Meanwhile, rumours about Solskjaer’s future - and who might replace him at United - were rife during the week, but the Norwegian has bought himself time with the result.

However, with a Champions League game against Atalanta on Tuesday and a derby game against Manchester City on Saturday, former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor believes Solskjaer will still be sacked soon.

“The players played for him today,” he said on talkSPORT . “From the first second of the game, they showed fight. They were fighting for Solskjaer.

“This was the obvious formation to play; your defenders are struggling, if you’re struggling to keep clean sheets, what are you going to do?

“You’re going to go five at the back, it’s not rocket science. I said it midweek, play five at the back, stop the goals going in and you have goalscorers in your team.

“You could have played Ronaldo, Cavani, Greenwood or Rashford as your two strikers because they would have scored today.

“Rashford comes on scores, you’re playing against a bang average Spurs team. Basically, for me, this is just prolonging what is going to happen.

“Ole is going to leave Manchester United, but you’ve got to give him credit for getting the result today.”

Solskjaer was delighted with the reaction from his players after he made two changes to the side which flopped against Liverpool.

Cavani and Raphael Varane came in for Rashford and Mason Greenwood, with the formation changed to 5-2-1-2, with Bruno Fernandes supporting the two strikers.

“You know you’re under pressure from day one when you walk in here and of course this week has been a difficult one for the players, fans they haven’t been happy but as I said out there, this is one game,” Solskjaer told MUTV .

“It’s the next one now – Atalanta. For me there’s so many other things out there, horrible things that you have to look at yourself and be happy that you are where you are and that you have the responsibility that you have.

“You have to enjoy it because when I don’t then it’s time to knock on and say ‘right that’s not me’.”
