Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told which two Man Utd signings he must make this summer

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must bolster his ranks with a new centre-back and midfielder this summer.

The Red Devils handed Solskjaer a three-year contract last week to make him their manager on a permanent basis.

The move had seemed inevitable given the transformation United have undergone since Solskjaer arrived on a caretaker basis following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December.

The Norwegian boss celebrated his full-time deal with a nervy 2-1 win over Watford on Saturday, a match that perhaps highlighted where he needs to strengthen his squad.

And Hargreaves, who won the Premier League and Champions League with United, has told Solskjaer to make at least two new signings.

Speaking on BT Sport following United’s win, he said: “They need a world class centre-back, that’s for sure.

“And they need somebody alongside [Paul] Pogba like [N’Golo] Kante like they have with France.

“They need someone in that mould to play next to Pogba.”

Glenn Hoddle, the Tottenham and England legend, agreed with Hargreaves that United need to bolster their ranks in those areas.

Hoddle added: “I think a centre-back would be the number one target.

“I think they’ve got enough firepower to score goals and if Pogba keeps playing like he is then you’ve got a talisman that can open doors and create and score goals himself.

“Perhaps under Mourinho you were thinking they need another midfielder like that, but he’s there. All that’s coming out of him.

“The French player that we see playing for France… he’s now doing that in a red shirt.”
