Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre has told Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he must win a trophy this season if he has any chance of keeping his job.
Solskjaer has come under increasing pressure following last Sunday’s 5-0 capitulation against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Though he will be in charge against Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday evening’s kick-off, a replacement could be on the cards if results on the pitch don’t improve.
Having assembled a star-studded squad over the past few seasons, Solskjaer is yet to win a major trophy with United and the arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo in the transfer window means there is no room for error.
Already out of the Carabao Cup after a 1-0 defeat to West Ham in the third round, United have only the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League to contend for.
Eight points behind league-leaders Chelsea has left United a mountain to climb already and should Solskjaer come out of the next few fixtures unscathed, Silvestre has warned him that only silverware at the end of the season will keep him in a job going forward.
"Ole Gunnar Solskjær must win a trophy this season and he’ll be aware of that,” Silvestre said in the Mirror, via MyBettingSites.
"[He must win one] for the players, the manager and for the club as it is in the DNA of Manchester United," Silvestre said.
"They were so close last season with the Europa League and I’m sure they’ll use that as extra motivation for this year to push them over the line.
"The team has all the ingredients to win trophies and be successful, but it’s about turning up on the day and finishing the job."
United last won a trophy in 2017 when Jose Mourinho led the team to the Europa League, beating Ajax in the final 2-0.
Solskjaer has lost three semi-finals and one final while in charge of United, losing to Villarreal last season in the Europa League final on penalties.
