Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told to persist with new Man Utd tactics after Tranmere Rovers win

Owen Hargreaves believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should persist with the back-three formation that saw Manchester United beat Tranmere Rovers 6-0 in the FA Cup.

United put six goals past their League One counterparts through six different goal-scorers, having raced into a 5-0 lead by half-time.

Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial did the damage in the opening 45 minutes before Mason Greenwood added a sixth from the penalty spot.

Having reverted away from the 3-5-2 system used at Anfield in United's midweek defeat to Burnley, Solskjaer went back to a three-man defence at Prenton Park.

United's dominance allowed for Maguire, in particular, to step out from the back, which led to his opener and Lingard's third.

It's a system that Solskjaer has experimented this season, particularly in the biggest games, such as Liverpool.

It's a formation that Hargreaves would like to see used more, as he feels United's ball-playing centre-backs mean that the system is better suited than a back four.

"I think it suits them. Lindelof can come out on the right side and Harry Maguire can on the other side. I think it suits their wing-backs, whether it's Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Shaw," Hargreaves told BT Sport at full-time.

"The attackers can then come inside because the wing-backs give the width. It's as good as I've seen them move the ball, I know they're better than the opposition but they moved the ball quickly, they looked really comfortable.

"We saw against Liverpool at home, it almost kick-started their season, and they played a back three. Again today, I think it's something we're going to see going forward."
