Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told he must sign in January - or forget about top four

Manchester United have been told by Alan Shearer that they have to make January transfers or risk missing out on a Champions League place.

The Red Devils are currently five points adrift of the top four places after their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday - with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah each notching for the Reds.

United have been heavily linked with midfielder Bruno Fernandes, although talks have stalled with Sporting Lisbon's valuation much higher than the English side's.

But it is a striker which the Red Devils will be on the hunt for - with Marcus Rashford out for around a month with a back injury and summer departure Romelu Lukaku still not replaced.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted at incomings at Old Trafford: "We’re always looking at chances to improve the squad."

But Premier League legend Shearer reckons that a spot in the Champions League is on the line for United's January dealings.

"United are lacking quality to get into a Champions League place unless they make some moves in the January transfer window.

"They are going to have to sit and be patient and hope to improve after every transfer window, which is going to take a while. Their fans are going to have to sit and suffer.

"It was always a big gamble going into the season with Rashford, Martial and Mason Greenwood as the only recognised strikers.

"I said right from the off that letting Romelu Lukaku go and not replacing him was a massive mistake.

"They needed a forward in, whether Rashford was carrying an injury or not. They are desperate for one now and where do you find a top quality one in the January transfer window? Erling Haaland seemed the only one and they missed out on him."
