Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told of the importance of winning silverware this season by Steve McClaren as their wait for success continues.
West Ham have already damaged their hopes of one trophy as Manuel Lanzini scored the only goal to knock them out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle.
But they are still fighting on the FA Cup and Champions League front, although their hopes of a Premier League challenge have all but faded away.
Much of the discussion at the moment is the future of their manager after a run of one win in their last six Premier League games. United's pre-season hopes of fighting at the summit have evaporated but the former United assistant believes it is now imperative that they add a trophy to the cabinet.
Jose Mourinho's Europa League triumph four years ago was the last time United had their name etched on the trophy with their penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal last season the closest they've came under Solskjaer.
And as Solskjaer edges closer to his fourth year in charge, the return has been marginal since he succeeded the Portuguese in 2018 and McClaren thinks he now has to utilise the strength in his squad.
"Generally, a team you’ll see it, mirror the image of the manager," he said on the McClaren Performance podcast.
" Ole was a winner, aserial winner, won a lot, knew his best place was [at] Man United.
"He’s gone away, managed Molde and did well, come to Cardiff and didn’t and got a second chance making the most of getting great backing from the board.
"What he needs to do, everybody else; Klopp, Conte coming in, Guardiola, Tuchel they’ve all won something. What players want to see is relationships, belonging.
"He knows the environment, the characters that should be in it and he’s put that in place but what players want from a manager is; will he improve me? Will he help me win on a Saturday? At Manchester United, will he win me trophies?
"That’s the question, the media have been talking about it for a long time but the dressing room have been with him all the way.
"Now you introduce Ronaldo and Varane. I think they are winners, they’re going: ‘they’re only five per cent, we need to do this to win, that to win,’ this is the season they have to win something.
"They’re contenders now and they have to win something."
