Man Utd still have the 'right man at the wheel' in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, says Ander Herrera

Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera insists Manchester United have “the right person at the wheel”, despite the club’s dramatic downturn in form since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was made permanent boss.

However, as the 29-year-old prepares to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires this summer, he warned fans that Solskjaer and his team will need time to turn the ship around.

United’s final-day defeat at home to Cardiff on Sunday, for which Herrera was not in the squad, rounded off a dismal season, which has ended in a run of just two wins in 12 games across all competitions since Solskjaer’s permanent appointment.

The Norwegian admitted after that result that it would be ‘a long time’ before United could challenge for the Premier League title again, but Herrera believes his soon-to-be old boss can deliver.

Manchester United appoint Mike Phelan as assistant manager

"I really believe in Ole,” Herrera said. “But I think there is a tough job ahead. That is my opinion as a fan and as someone who knows the club at the moment.

"These fans are the best, they are amazing, but they need time. They need time because this is not going to be from the first day. The club will need time, confidence and support.

"I am sure they will give it but the only thing I ask for them is time because this is not easy.

"The right person is at the wheel. He's the right person."
