Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singles out one player for praise after Man Utd defeat

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Scott McTominay as the one positive from their 2-1 defeat at Wolves .

The young midfielder opened the scoring with a powerful drive into the bottom corner and generally impressed with an energetic display.

It was not enough to lead the lacklustre Red Devils to victory as their top four hopes were dealt a blow at Molineux.

A Chris Smalling own goal after a defensive mix-up handed the home side victory on a night when a disappointed Solskjaer was left ruing missed chances.

"We didn't pounce on big moments in the game," Solskjaer told BBC Sport.

"Scott McTominay played really well tonight, he's been excellent. He gave us a goal threat, energy and legs - very pleased with him.

"There's a couple of mistakes from us. We gave them that first goal, we have to be honest."

Solskjaer's side were dealt a blow with the scores level when Ashley Young was shown a second yellow card for a tackle on Diogo Jota.

"When you're on a yellow and you go in you're always in danger of getting another one," Solskjaer admitted.

"He hit the ball but followed through and hit him. It's a yellow card.

"At 10 men it's hard but we had to keep the ball. We didn't want them to put pressure on us. They scored with their first chance after the sending off and you have to give them credit for that.

"Very disappointed with the result but pleased with the performance up until 75 mins. An excellent performance from the boys."

With their Premier League top four chances dented, United will now turn their attentions to a Champions League clash with Barcelona next Wednesday before returning to domestic action against West Ham .
