Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'sent message to Mauricio Pochettino' in Man Utd win over Tottenham

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made the perfect statement to Mauricio Pochettino by masterminding a Manchester United win over the Tottenham team built by the Argentine manager.

That's the view of legendary former United keeper Peter Schmeichel, who was speaking after Solskjaer's Red Devils beat Jose Mourinho's Tottenham 2-1 in Wednesday's Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

The pressure has been ramped up on Solskjaer after Pochettino was sacked by Spurs last month and replaced by former United manager Mourinho.

Pochettino was in the frame to replace Mourinho when he was sacked as United boss a year ago before Solskjaer was given the reins - and the Argentine's sudden availability has fuelled speculation he could finally land the Old Trafford job.

And Schmeichel said the win has bought Solskjaer some time as he urged patience with his former United teammate.

"It will give him a few days peace and quiet for sure," said the treble-winner on Amazon Prime, which has broadcast this week's Premier League games.

"He has got a really young team here and we shouldn't forget he will have ups and downs.

"He lined his team up with more energy then we have seen in recent games and Scott McTominay being back today was a boost."

Solskjaer's United side were ninth going into Wednesday's clash, with just four wins from their 14 games played.

But victory over Tottenham - thanks to Marcus Rashford's double and a much improved performance - fired United up to sixth place as they bid to chase down a top-four spot.

Next up for United is a visit to the Etihad to face rivals Manchester City in Saturday's derby.

City appear to have recovered some form just in time for the derby, having thrashed Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor on Tuesday.

But Solskjaer said his United side must view the game as a chance to show they can be competitive once again with the league's top sides.

"It’s Man City on Saturday now, two days recovery and we go again," said the United boss.

"We’ve just got to get as many points on the board as possible and I’ve said before this game it’s a great chance to show what we can do.”
