Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent message about "unrecognisable" David de Gea by Phil Neville

Phil Neville insists David de Gea is now “unrecognisable” from his former self after his nightmare FA Cup semi-final display.

However, the former Manchester United defender insists that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should stick with him.

De Gea was badly at fault as United were beaten 3-1 by Chelsea at Wembley.

The Spaniard could have done better with Olivier Giroud’s opener.

He was duly beaten by a tame Mason Mount effort early in the second half, where there were no doubts that he was at fault.

Those mistakes follow a number of recent errors, which have drawn criticism from the likes of United legend Roy Keane.

And Neville says Solskjaer must be worried about the continued dip in his under-fire No.1.

“He’s unrecognisable from the goalkeeper that won player of the year four years out of five years.

"He’s making mistakes. A confident, assured, on-form David de Get saves all three (today).

“If I was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, then I would be worried because of his performance levels. They’ve dipped and his inconsistency is costing United games.

"I wouldn't leave him out yet.

“His credentials are still up there with the best in the world - he’s just lost all his confidence.”

However, speaking on BBC One, Alan Shearer disagreed with Neville and insisted that now is the time for De Gea to be taken out the lineup.

“If the goalkeeper makes one mistake, or possibly two, you think you should stick with him.

“But, now is the time. It’s not just one, it keeps happening.”

The question is what do United do if they move out De Gea?

Long-time No.2 Sergio Romero is there as backup and has proven himself a more than capable deputy, while Dean Henderson - on loan at Sheffield United - has made clear his desire to be United’s No.1.

“I think you only bring Dean Henderson back to Manchester United as the number one,” added Shearer.

“I don’t think there’s any point for him to sit on the bench.

“Or you keep him where he is to keep gaining experience. Has that time come? I think yes, that time has come.”
