Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sends message to Manchester United youngsters playing against Derby

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told the Manchester United youngsters set to feature against Derby County at Pride Park to take the chance to impress him.

United step up their pre-season preparations with their first friendly of the summer against Championship opposition in the form of Wayne Rooney's Rams.

With those players who featured in the European Championship and Copa America still on holiday, it's a youthful United side to take on Derby.

Teden Mengi, Brandon Williams, James Garner, Dylan Levitt and Anthony Elanga all start, as does Tahith Chong, who has already agreed a loan move to Birmingham City.

Di'Shon Bernard, Will Fish, Ethan Galbraith, Hannibal Mejbri, Facundo Pellistri, Shola Shoretire and Joe Hugill are all on the bench and will get a run out at some point at Pride Park.

“I think they can impress me, I’m sure they will try to," Solskjaer told MUTV.

"Young kids when they get a chance, they’re there because they’re good players now it’s seeing who can handle playing with the senior ones and who can fit in with the group. We’ve got a young group training but we’ve got some experience with Juan, Nemanja, Jesse, Alex, experienced pros."

There are some experienced faces for United. Tom Heaton starts in goal as he makes his second debut for the club having returned as a free agent this summer. There are also starts for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Juan Mata and Mason Greenwood but most players will only feature for 45 minutes apiece.

“This is going to be draining for them but we’ll make loads of changes, they’ll have 45 minutes each, the two centre backs will last a little bit longer than that, but it’s the first proper test," added Solskjaer.

There are more familiar faces in the Derby side, including Ravel Morrison who is on trial with the Rams and trying to earn a contract.

“I had Rav in the reserves, what a talent, a top, top player. The last time I saw him play was for Ostersunds against Molde, he’s had a career with some ups and downs but he’s always had talent," said Solskjaer.
