Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's warning to Man Utd after Carabao Cup scare

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told his Manchester United players to be more ruthless – after they scraped past League One Rochdale on penalties in the Carabao Cup.

The pressure on Solskjaer increased after Rochdale - 53 places below United in the football league ladder - held them for 90 minutes before the Red Devils edged the shoot-out .

Mason Greenwood, 17, gave United the lead in the 68th minute, before 16-year-old defender Luke Matheson equalised 14 minutes from time to send the game to spot-kicks.

Solskjaer cut a relieved figure after the shoot-out triumph but was once again left to bemoan his side's lack of a killer touch.

“We go 1-0 up in many games and again it was the same and you think 'come on then, get the second' and that's the key,” said Solskjaer.

“That's the learning curve at this club - you don’t sit back and think that's good enough. If you settle for good enough, that's not what we want.

“We handled the penalties really well, we're very pleased with the confidence - we're better in penalty shoot-outs than we are in proper games!”

United were drawn away to Chelsea in the and Solskajer said: “If we want to win this competition we have to beat the best and the tie slots into a couple of weeks in which we have a lot of travelling.

“But we have to make the best of it. That's the type of club we are. We'll relish the game at Chelsea and look forward to it.”

United scored all of their penalties, with Daniel James converting the winning spot-kick, after Jimmy Keohane had missed for Rochdale.
