Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's private chat with Donny van de Beek over Man Utd predicament

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to have held talks with Donny van de Beek over his predicament this season.

Van de Beek started for United in the 3-2 win over Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday as his run in cup games continued.

The £37m arrival from Ajax has started just two Premier League games this term, with most of his minutes coming in other competitions.

Understandably, this is said to have left Van de Beek wondering where he fits in at Old Trafford.

But The Athletic claim that Solskjaer has spoken directly to Van de Beek about the issue to assure him of his future at the club.

The short meeting is believed to have gone well, with Van de Beek given the impression that his game time will increase as the season wears on.

The 23-year-old is viewed as a long-term signing, so one season of bedding in may do him a world of good before entering the fray more regularly later this season or next term.

The five-year contract Van de Beek signed reflects that too, though he was told he would feature in around half of United’s games this season, a promise that has not so far been kept.

Solskjaer admitted that his versatile midfielder was unsettled by the current situation before the win over Liverpool.

"I wouldn’t say that Donny is happy,” said the Norwegian. “Of course, he wants to play more, but he gets about his job in the right manner.

"We are doing well and have got players who are playing really well in his position."

Match winner Bruno Fernandes also gave opinion on the situation, admitting he was sympathetic towards his team-mate.

“We have a really good squad and we have options. If you look at the bench and the first XI today and the ones at home we have a really good squad, it will not be a problem if we change the team or someone is tired because we have really good players," the United talisman told MUTV.

“Donny did a great game, playing in the position I play watching him he moves really good, he played really well. It's important for us.

"If I was in the position of Donny I would not be happy at all but the most important is doing what he does today, coming in and helping the team.”
