Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's prediction about Anthony Martial has been proven wrong at Manchester United

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backed Anthony Martial to be a success at the club after seeing him in training.

Solskjaer's comments from the beginning of the season paint a very different picture to the one being portrayed by Ralf Rangnick following yesterday's draw with Aston Villa.

After the match, which saw United pegged back to draw 2-2 after being 2-0 up, the German claimed that the Frenchman had refused to join up with the matchday squad.

Martial hit back at these claims on Instagram not long afterwards, saying he'd never refuse to play for United.

But, speaking back in August before the opening day fixture against Leeds, Solskjaer praised the forward's attitude.

"As I’ve said before we really rate Anthony. Last season was disappointing, we had injuries, he lost some form, the season before he was our top scorer," he told a pre-match press conference.

"If Anthony is taking all the penalties, or Marcus Rashford last season would have taken all the penalties, that’s another 10-15 goals for a centre forward but we’ve got Bruno [Fernandes] who’s so confident on pens that you can’t take that away from him really.

"I’m very confident and I like what I see from Anthony when I see him in training now, and when I see him in the gym he has that little bit of grit between his teeth again.”

This appeared to be short-lived though as despite featuring in the first four games of the season he lost his place due to fitness in the middle of October and after suffering a knee injury which kept him out of matches against Crystal Palace and Norwich City, he failed to return to the squad.
