Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defiant response when asked about assurances over Man Utd job

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come out fighting when asked about his situation at Manchester United.

The Norweigan has come under increasing pressure over the weeks and that came to a head on Sunday when the Red Devils were thrashed by Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 drubbing with many believing that this was the end of the line for Solskjaer.

It was the fifth loss in nine matches and continues an abysmal run of one clean sheet in 21 games but the 48-year-old is still clinging to his job.

A series of meetings agreed to give Solskjaer this weekend to save his career as United take on fellow underperformers Tottenham in London.

There have been a number of managers linked to the post but the former Molde boss has insisted he is going nowhere - though he will not ask for assurances over his job.

“I’ve had communication with the board and I don’t expect them to come and give me assurances,” he said.

“When you have a performance and a spell like we’ve had, that’s not what I call about and say.

"My job is to put things right and that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m not here to ask for assurances.

“I’m responsible and it’s my job to put things right. We need a reaction, we can’t have a performance like this again.

"I’ve said it 100 times to all of you that nothing because history as quickly as a game of football and you have to move forward.

“But this game is such a dark moment and it will be in the history books for a long spell so it’s even more important that we learn from it, put things right and make sure we’re ready for the next one.”

Antonio Conte had been linked with taking over but reports have indicated that Brendan Rodgers is now leading the chase.

And Solskjaer is expected to make some big changes to the side that faces Spurs today and was asked whether he would drop Harry Maguire, who was in shoddy form against Liverpool.

He said: “In a squad like we have with top quality players everyone expects to play, and I expect every one of them to expect to play but they’re also ready that they know they have good teammates around them and no one is undroppable, of course they’re not.

“But it’s up to me to pick the right team for the games and see who is in the right frame of mind for Saturday and then Tuesday is Champions League.”
