Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's challenge to Jesse Lingard ahead of West Ham move

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged Jesse Lingard to prove how good he is at West Ham before returning to Manchester United.

The midfielder has sealed a loan move to the Hammers for the remainder of the season.

Lingard has found minutes hard to come by under Solskjaer at Old Trafford with all his appearances coming in cup competitions this season.

The 28-year-old was initially a crucial player at United when the Norwegian arrived.

Since then though his form has declined and he has fallen down the pecking order.

Solskjaer has now urged the academy graduate to take advantage of his time at the London Stadium and rediscover his mojo.

“We want Jesse to come back here revitalised and having shown at West Ham how good a player he is, of course,” he said.

“He’s just been unfortunate with a couple of issues – some periods that he had to stay away from us with the Covid and isolation, with the close contact.

“The rest of the team has done well. We’ve had little to no injuries and he’s not forced his way into the team, unfortunately.

“I just want him to go there and enjoy himself, show how good a player he is and come back. He's a Man United player through and through.”

The Red Devils have not welcomed any new additions this month but have seen several players leave.

Marcos Rojo could be the latest of those as he edges closer to an Argentine return.

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero is poised to see out his deal at Old Trafford.

“Likely that Jesse’s loan deal with West Ham is going through, likely that Marcos goes back to Argentina,” Solskjaer added. “Little bit of paperwork left to be done, I think.

“Sergio, I’ve not heard anything there apart from that he’ll be with us for the rest of his contract.”
