Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed the trick he taught Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in training while they played together at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer was part of the squad for 11 years between 1996 and 2007, meaning he got to line up alongside some true greats from the Sir Alex Ferguson era during his time. That includes the start of the careers of two modern legends in Ronaldo and Rooney, who went on to become two of the best to ever wear the shirt.
Speaking in an interview with the club's official website to celebrate the 25th anniversary of him joining Manchester United for the first time, Solskjaer spoke about what it was like to work with them and revealed that there was a trick he taught them in training.
"I went into coaching as well, so I did try to teach them a few things. I think I’ve got more knowledge than most of making the most out of your opportunities.
"I was never the quickest, never the strongest or tallest, so I had to be clever. Every time when Wayne or Cristiano shifted the ball to the side and put it back through the legs of the defender, and the goalkeeper’s just stranded, I used to nudge my kids and say, “Your dad’s taught them that!”
"Apart from that I think you’ve got to ask the players. I think I led more by example. I wasn’t the vocal one who went round and tried to tell anyone, I wanted to show with my attitude and what I did, day in day out."
