Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals Man Utd targets for next season after Cardiff defeat

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed their targets after a miserable season fizzled out.

Just a week after being held to a draw by bottom of the table Huddersfield , the Red Devils were beaten 2-0 by relegated Cardiff at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer's side finished sixth in the Premier League table after a rollercoaster campaign - and he admits they're not going to suddenly jump back into title contention.

With the Norwegian planning a summer rebuild ahead of his first full season at the helm, he says a return to the top four and adding silverware will be their target.

“We’re used to challenging for the Premier League and that’s not going to be sorted quickly," Solksjaer said after their Cardiff defeat.

“Realistically you’re not going to catch however many points – we’re 32 points behind the top teams.

“We’ve got to realistically challenge for the top four and another trophy.

“Last time we were in the Europa League with Jose (Mourinho) and loads of these players, we won it. The FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, they’re trophies we’ve got to start the season aiming to win.”

Solskjaer also lifted the lid on recent talks with United chief Ed Woodward.

He said: "I've had loads of conversations and they've been up front and honest. We know where we are at and it's too far behind where we want to be.

"Towards the end of the season it makes it clearer. When I came in around Christmas and when we had that great run of form, sometimes that's human nature, you're confident, maybe overconfident, and we pipped games into our favour, we played some great football at times and towards the end we've seen that exceptional efficiency we had didn't last, so they know we're in for a rebuild."
