Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responds to Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams discipline claims

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has rubbished claims young stars Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams were missing at the weekend for disciplinary reasons.

Both would have been expected to be involved in the 4-1 win over Newcastle but were missing amid allegations they had breached the club's code of conduct.

Williams, 20, travelled with the United squad to France for the Champions League clash with Paris St Germain, while Greenwood did not travel.

Solskjaer said: "If that's the case why is Brandon here? Where are your sources, that's what I'm saying.

When asked: "So no truth in that whatsoever?", the United manager replied: "No."

Greenwood was pictured training with the rest of the team in Manchester before their departure, with Solskjaer claiming the 19-year-old was injured.

He said: "I can’t declare medical stuff. It's just a niggle and, even though he's young, we don’t want to take any chances with him. Hopefully he'll be okay for the weekend."

Greenwood's omission from United's squad at the weekend was even more baffling, given he had not been involved with England during the latest international break.

He was sent home from England duty on the previous international break, along with Phil Foden, after the pair were caught smuggling two women into the team hotel in Iceland, and left out of the latest squad as punishment.

Tonight United will also have to do without skipper Harry Maguire, while Eric Bailly, Jesse Lingard and deadline day singing Edinson Cavani – who had hoped to feature against his former club – also did not travel.

In Maguires's absence, Bruno Fernandes will captain United, with Solskjaer praising the impact made by the Portuguese playmaker since his January arrival.

“Bruno has come in and had a positive impact,” said Solskjaer. “The stats show that and his performances have been receiving great praise as well.

“We hope Harry will be fit for the weekend, we're not sure, but we hope so, and the captain sits next to me - Bruno will captain the team tomorrow.”

Fernandes said: “I wasn't expecting this, for me it's an honour.

“To be captain for my team-mates and captain of Manchester United is an important achievement for me.”
