Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rejects Liverpool suggestion as Man City crowned champions

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has rejected the suggestion that his focus was on Liverpool and not Leicester ahead of the visit of the Foxes.

Solskjaer made 10 changes to the team which defeated Aston Villa on Saturday, handing Premier League debuts to Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga.

While the Red Devils much weakened team held their own against Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester side, it was not enough to avoid a defeat which also confirmed Manchester City ’s status as champions.

Luke Thomas had opened the scoring for the Foxes with a magnificent first-half volley, before Mason Greenwood continued his hot streak in front of goal by scoring the equaliser.

But Rodgers’ men began to dominate after the break and scored a deserved winner through Caglar Soyuncu's header from a corner.

The match came in the middle of a brutal stretch of fixtures for United, with the clash at Old Trafford one of three league games in five days.

They are next in action on Thursday night, when Jurgen Klopp brings his Liverpool side to Old Trafford.

It is expected that Solskjaer will name a far stronger team for the visit of the Reds, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford all benched for the defeat to Leicester.

Solskjaer though has rejected the suggestion that his thoughts have been focused on the Liverpool game, insisting that he was unhappy with the loss to Leicester.

“No, this is not the night to think about Liverpool,” he said.

“Now we’re disappointed because I thought we played well and we could’ve got a point towards the end. Maybe should’ve created more in the second half, but I’m happy with it.”

The defeat to the Foxes also saw United’s fierce rivals City confirmed as Premier League champions for the third time in four seasons, with the Red Devils an unassailable 10 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men.
