Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recalls "fiery games" against Leeds United ahead of Manchester United's weekend clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played for Manchester United between 1996 and 2007, seeing his fair share of clashes with arch rivals Leeds United, scoring four goals against the Whites along the way.

This weekend, Leeds travel to Old Trafford in the league for the first time in 16 years, hoping to dole out similar punishment as they did in the FA Cup ten years ago courtesy of Jermaine Beckford.

Ahead of the game, Solskjaer has recounted his own experiences of Leeds, fully aware of the rivalry between the two giants of English football.

"There were fiery games, tackles flying in, players from both teams who were winners. We had a few fights of course.

"Elland Road wasn’t the quietest place when we came off the coach walking into the stadium, put it that way," the Norwegian added, all but confirming the customary abuse Manchester United players suffered in West Yorkshire before even taking to the field.

Solskjaer was in the starting XI the last time Manchester United tasted defeat at the hands of Leeds in the Premier League - a narrow 1-0 scoreline at Elland Road back in September 2002, which marked the return of Rio Ferdinand following his £29 million relocation to Manchester.

Perhaps as a way of winding up Leeds' supporters, Solskjaer even made particular comment to his personal victories over the club, making reference to specific goals he scored.

"I enjoyed scoring two goals in a win at Elland Road. I came on as a sub and it was a header at the back stick from a cross from [Ryan] Giggsy headed back to the other side."

Leeds will be hoping Solskjaer trudges towards the tunnel at Old Trafford when the final whistle sounds this Sunday with his tail firmly between his legs, particularly after his pre-match comments.

Despite his own complimentary admission that Leeds are a different outfit from what his side will be used to facing, the remnants of a fierce rivalry which he contested as a player still remain, emanating through his choice of words.

He did stress that he had hoped fans would be allowed back into Old Trafford but was disappointed in the decision to keep Manchester in the highest tier of coronavirus restrictions - tier three.

Perhaps the Norwegian was hoping to draw on some added motivation for his players to see out what will be a strenuous contest for both sides.

Nevertheless, it promises to be a blockbuster of an affair, with both teams eager to settle old scores.

In closing, Solskjaer referred to "loads of great memories" from his clashes with Leeds as a player; the Whites' fanbase will hope he is left with nothing but regret on Sunday evening.
