Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'ready to break Man Utd transfer policy' for Mandzukic

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly prepared to break his own transfer policy to sign Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic in January.

Since his permanent appointment to the United hotseat in March, Solskjaer has young, hungry British players, in a move away from recruiting star names.

In the summer, United signed centre-half Harry Maguire from Leicester City, right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace , and winger Daniel James from Swansea.

United were also in talks over signing Mandzukic, and are to renew their pursuit of the 33-year-old after their failure to sign replacements for Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez left Solskjaer came back to bite them.

The gamble backfired after first-choice forwards Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were both injured, leaving 17-year-old Mason Greenwood to lead the line.

Rashford has since returned, although Solskjaer will be without Jesse Lingard for Sunday's trip to Newcastle after he was injured against Newcastle.

So with Solskjaer desperately needing a new striker when the January transfer window opens, he will dispense with his transfer policy of only targeting young homegrown players in order to sign Mandzukic, according to the Metro .

Mandzukic was in discussions with United in the summer but the two parties couldn't come to an agreement, and he remained in Turin to gauge whether he still had a future at Juve.

The striker, has been frozen out by Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri, who did not register Mandzukic in his Champions League squad.

Now that the veteran knows where he stands, it is thought he could be more open to a move which should cost around £9million.

Although he wouldn't fit neatly into Solskjaer's style of play, he would provide an experienced and capable back-up option to Rashford and Martial.

The Croatian is strong in the air, so would provide a good Plan B for when the tactics need changing up.
