Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pinpoints reason behind David de Gea's Manchester United improvement

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks David de Gea has 'matured' after enduring a tumultuous season at Manchester United.

De Gea's battle with Dean Henderson for the number one spot at Old Trafford now seems a distant memory after De Gea's improved form.

United beat Villarreal 2-1 in midweek and De Gea played an important role in that win, making multiple excellent saves and delivering yet another excellent performance - the stopper's penalty heroics ensured United won the three points against West Ham, too.

Now, Solskjaer has revealed that the reason behind De Gea's improved form is that the 30-year-old has recently 'matured' at United.

“You know, people mature and players mature," Solskjaer told United's in-house media.

"You get different challenges in your career, he came up against a new challenge for him, I felt last season, didn’t play as much and of course with Spain as well, but David has reacted as any professional should do.

"It’s hurting your pride a little bit that you don’t play as much and he’s getting towards that perfect age for a goalkeeper.

"He’s got experience, physically, he’s working really hard to be stronger and mentally, I have to say he’s been so, so positive.

"So, it’s down to him. And of course, the coaches that work with him every day, but him, that he decides, ‘okay, I’m here at Manchester United and I want to stay’.”
