Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pinpoints moment Manchester United lost control in Champions League campaign

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pinpointed Manchester United's defeat away to Istanbul Basaksehir as the moment they lost control in the Champions League this season.

United were knocked out of the competition on Tuesday night after a 3-2 defeat by RB Leipzig in the Red Bull Arena.

Solskjaer's side headed to Germany knowing they would qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League as long as they avoided defeat to the team they had already thrashed once in the competition.

However, things quickly turned sour as United found themselves two goals down within 13 minutes and three goals down with just twenty minutes left in the match.

A late fightback from United saw them score twice in quick succession through Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, but it was not enough as they failed to secure the vital point required for qualification.

United had seemed certain of qualification from Group H having beaten Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig in their opening two matches but Solskjaer thinks the 2-1 defeat away against Basaksehir on match day three marked their undoing in Europe this season.

"We weren't good enough," Solskjaer told BT Sport. "In a difficult group. We started really well, but obviously the big turning point or the big defeat for us was the one away to Istanbul. That was the one that you look back at and think that is where we lost the points which we should have had.

"Today we were close, but we knew we had to defend crosses, knew we had to defend balls in the box and we just couldn't clear them."
