Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opens up on pipping Leeds United to Dan James signing

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Manchester United manager, has spoken of his delight that the Red Devils managed to lure former Leeds United transfer target Daniel James to Old Trafford this summer.

The Premier League club, who are in Europa League action against FC Astana at Old Trafford on Thursday night, swooped to sign James from Swansea City in June for a reported fee of £15m.

James' switch to the Red Devils came as a bitter pill for Leeds to swallow as they were inches away from concluding a deal for the winger back in January. James had passed a medical with the Whites, agreed personal terms and posed for photographs holding his new shirt, only for the Swans to pull the plug on the deal at the very last minute, leaving United's top bosses, including chairman Andrea Radrizzani, fuming.

But James has since, of course, joined Manchester United and has made a promising start with the Red Devils, scoring three Premier League goals already this season.

On James, who featured in the Leeds United Amazon documentary, 'Take Me Home Leeds United,' Solskjaer said: That we managed to get him to Manchester is fantastic.

"He has proven with his x-factor that he will give the squad a lot.

“I don’t watch many documentaries, but I know he was close to joining Leeds but that’s football.

“Sometimes you have to take a chance. He’s started well here.”
