Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opens the door to working with a Director of Football at Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opened the door to working with a Director of Football at the club next season.

The Norwegian was named United's new permanent boss last week, and revealed in his pre-match press conference to preview his side's game against Wolves on Tuesday night that he has already held discussions with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and co-chairman Joel Glazer to identify the perfect candidate for the role.

Ever since the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December, there have been plenty of rumours about the Red Devils appointing a Director of Football, with names like Edwin van der Sar, Andrea Berta and Sven Mislintat all mentioned for the role .

And despite Mourinho having a reported reluctance to work with such an appointment at the club, Solskjaer believes it is sensible for a manager to split responsibilities in this day and age.

"Football has changed and the structure at football clubs has changed," Solskjaer told the media .

"Me and Ed and Joel for that matter are of course looking to how can this club be ran as smoothly and as well as possible.

"So we'll see what the club will end up with and I'm happy discussing football with knowledgeable in the right positions anyway.

Man Utd comment: The real work starts now for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford

"From the first couple of managers, it used to be club secretaries back then when we were founded more than 100 years ago. But that's the way football goes, I think. A manager can't do as much as he used to do when my gaffer started.

"I'm feeling older and older, 46 is quite a good number! I think the demands of football nowadays means you've got to split responsibilities."
