Jadon Sancho's Man Utd debut vs Leeds plunged into doubt after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer update

Manchester United look set to be without both of their major summer signings when the Premier League season gets underway this weekend.

Despite attempting to get the majority of their transfer business completed early, it now looks likely that Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane could miss their opener vs Leeds United at Old Trafford.

The signing of Sancho was officially confirmed before the end of July, while a deal to sign Varane was 'agreed in principle' was also announced before the start of August.

However, while the wait for Varane's announcement goes on, Sancho has managed to complete just one-and-a-half training sessions with his new team after feeling sick, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed.

The £72.9million man only returned to pre-season training at the start of this week, having being granted an extended leave following England's exploits at Euro 2020.

In fact, he was a full week later to returning to Carrington than his Three Lions teammates Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.

That always meant that being involved against Leeds looked a long shot, but Solskjaer has added further doubt to that situation occurring, revealing the winger has been suffering with a bout of sickness.

Speaking to Norwegian outlet TV 2 Sporten via MetroSport, Solskjaer explained: "He has had a holiday after the European Championships and then he has been a little sick, unfortunately.

"He has had one-and-a-half training sessions with us, so he has not trained much.

"It may take some time before he gets into top shape, but throughout the season he will be very important to us.

"He is a player I am sure will give us many happy moments in the years to come."

The United boss has already assured supporters that he won't throw players into the mix before they are physically prepared to compete after a hectic summer.

"We've had a longer pre-season than last year, last season we had a full group for five days before the Crystal Palace game, so that was a difficult one, naturally, because we went so far in Europe and played a tournament after,” he said earlier this week.

"This summer, at least everyone has had three weeks off. Some have had four, some have had five, we're still lacking match minutes for a few. But we're getting there, better prepared than last season.

"Some started July 5, some trained with us for the first time this week, of course Jadon is next week and Raphael hopefully when the medical is sorted he'll be a few days with us.

"But we have to get them through a fitness regime and programme. We can't just throw them into a game.

"The staff are doing great work, the sports science guys are working hard to get everyone up to speed as quickly as possible."
