In the wake of this pretty dismal defeat and disappointing performance, a lot of questions will be asked of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
If he remains in his job, as he surely will, and when the dust has settled, here is one that he should be asking himself.
If only rhetorically.
Does he need Harry Kane?
When you can only manage a single goal against Villarreal in 120 minutes of football, then the answer is blindingly obvious.
And anyway, if you can get Kane at a price you can afford and Kane wants to come, you get him. End of.
You simply deal with the repercussions for other players, that is why you are the manager of an elite club.
But Edinson Cavani is some player and is an athletic and swift a 34-year-old footballer as you are likely to see.
Never mind the one extra year he is giving Manchester United, Cavani - at his opportunistic best for the equaliser - looks capable of operating at the highest level for a few more to come.
Having agreed to extend his stay, though, the Uruguayan will want to play in every big game next season.
Kane to Manchester City might well be the likeliest outcome so the scenario might be improbable.
But if the England captain did want Old Trafford to be his destination, Solskjaer would have to be sure he could pair the two upfront on a regular basis.
And he most certainly could.
Because while it would not be the youngest of strike combinations, what a combination it would be.
Solskjaer would have his managerial acumen tested by his use, or otherwise, of Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, but that would be a heck of an attacking roster.
The only thing Solskjaer and the wallet-holders would need to consider is if a successful bid for Kane would impact on their search for a second top-class centre-half.
Harry Maguire has missed Manchester United’s last five matches and has been outstanding in them all.
The old line that an injured footballer can look better with every game his team-mates play without him has never been more appropriate than it is in Maguire’s case.
United have conceded in all of the contests from which Maguire has been absent.
Maguire can make the odd mistake but he is a born organiser, a magnificent reader of a game, not afraid to make telling incursions, and a serious aerial force at both ends of the pitch.
Yet it is too easy to say Maguire’s considerable presence would have made a difference when Dani Parejo swung over the free-kick that was diverted in by Gerard Moreno just before the half-hour mark.
It might have had an effect but the truth is that United have regularly been conceding that type of goal for some considerable time, even with their captain in the heart of the defence.
But what the Villarreal goal demonstrated was that serious competition for the role of Maguire’s central defensive partner is needed.
Victor Lindelof HAS improved and had a run of games this season when he looked capable of forming a very decent partnership with Maguire.
But there is no doubt he was at fault, even partially, for Moreno’s goal.
If there is any mitigation, it is that United’s defensive unit, as a whole, has at times looked oddly vulnerable.
It cannot help that Solskjaer still cannot nominate a permanent number one.
He has to give the gloves to one of Dean Henderson and David de Gea, who played here, and tell the other he is free to find a new club.
And maybe the money can be put towards that bid for Kane and creating a forward duo that would strike fear into the very best.
