Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might already know the solution to Manchester United's new goalkeeper dilemma

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already made one bold decision between the posts at Old Trafford - but further changes could be on the way this summer.

Following a decade as the main man, David de Gea has been displaced as Manchester United number one by Dean Henderson - a graduate of the club's famed academy.

It was a call many observers saw coming, but that does not detract from how difficult it must have been.

After honing his skills further down the EFL pyramid during loan spells at Grimsby Town, Shrewsbury and Sheffield United, Henderson was introduced to the Premier League last season upon winning Championship promotion with the Blades.

The 24-year-old had to bide his time after returning to Old Trafford, but Solskjaer simply couldn't ignore Henderson any longer, leading to a change in the guard.

Boasting a four-strong goalkeeping unit that rivals any other team in Europe, United know full-well it offers them a luxury that simply can't be justified in the long-term - not if they are to strengthen in other areas in their bid to reel City in next year.

Sergio Romero is widely expected to leave for pastures new, while Lee Grant could move into a coaching role, and United also have Nathan Bishop.

In senior terms, only Henderson and De Gea would remain. But for how long?

Of course, given the Spaniard's wage packet and the transfer fee he might command, potential suitors for De Gea have been narrowed down as a result.

You wouldn't, though, expect a goalkeeper of his calibre and pedigree to be content as a back-up.

United have to prepare for both scenarios - De Gea staying or leaving - and they might just have found the perfect fit in Aston Villa stopper Tom Heaton.

A familiar face at Old Trafford having progressed through the youth ranks, the 35-year-old had to, unlike Henderson, leave in order to make his way in a first-team environment.

Heaton continues to be linked with a return to United, while some media outlets are suggesting if it's not already a done deal, then it's only a matter of dotting the Is and crossing the Ts, so to speak.

Certainly not as eye-catching as some of the potential summer deals that await, namely Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, but it's a move that just makes sense.

In a perfect world, United would be able to keep Henderson and De Gea happy simultaneously. That, though, is not a realistic proposition, nor would it be sustainable.

For want of a better term, Heaton would know and understand his place; as second or third choice.

Having performed in a similar role as understudy to Emiliano Martinez at Villa Park this season, he is well versed in the role, while in the event of injury or suspension, he would offer United a safe pair of hands.

The goalkeeping pecking order at any club is similar to road racing. In that respect, think of Heaton as a navigator to Henderson. There can't be two drivers.
