Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes 'unfair' Liverpool claim as he sends Jurgen Klopp Manchester United reminder

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken a swipe at Liverpool by claiming his aim is to try and reel in Manchester City next season.

United currently hold a 13-point advantage over Jurgen Klopp's side heading into this afternoon’s clash between the two clubs at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer’s side endured their eighth goalless draw of the season at Leeds United on Sunday, with United only managing four efforts on target during the game.

However, the Old Trafford club did return to winning ways in the Europa League on Thursday after coming from behind to beat Roma.

And Solskjaer has claimed catching up with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City is his primary focus for next season.

He said: “You know, we aren't looking back, we're looking forward and looking up to challenge Man City even more.

“Because I don't think we have challenged them enough this season so that's our aim - to go one step further and challenge a lot more than we have done this season.”

Joe Willock's stoppage time leveller rescued Newcastle United a point against Jurgen Klopp's side at Anfield last weekend as Liverpool’s struggles in front of goal continued.

But Solskjaer believes the Reds still present a big threat to United today as they have a forward line that can damage any team.

“They have been great the last few years, a very good team but for one reason or another this season they have got less points,” he said.

“But I just look at ourselves. This season has been such a tough one for everyone, it's been a difficult year but I am very pleased with the progress we have made.

“They've got world class players and are also missing one of the best centre backs in the world but they still have quality players around.

“And we know that when we played them in the FA Cup earlier this season and although we went through 3-2 it was a very, very tight game and they thought they deserved to go through as much as we did.”

Liverpool ended a 30-year wait for a league championship last season, but have endured a campaign to forget this year.

Their Premier League title defence was over by February, while they were knocked out of the FA Cup by United back in January.

The Reds also exited the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid last month and currently face a battle to secure a place in next season’s competition.

One of the main reasons for Liverpool’s struggles this season has been injuries to a number of key stars, but Solskjaer refused to be drawn on the Reds’ poor run of form.

He said: “I don't want to comment on Liverpool too much. I don't want to talk about my feelings for them because I don't think that's fair.

“Injuries can happen to anyone and you just want to make the most of your team in every game.”
