Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes Manchester United vs Chelsea prediction ahead of huge top four clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes three points are essential for both Manchester United and Chelsea when they meet at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

United are on their worst run of form since 1962 with seven defeats in their previous nine games and risk missing out on fourth place and the berth in next season's Champions League that comes with it.

The Reds sit sixth in the table, three points adrift of Chelsea in fourth place, though Maurizio Sarri's side have drawn and lost in their previous two outings.

But Solskjaer says United's showing in the first half of their 2-0 defeat by Manchester City on Wednesday night has restored belief among his first-team squad.

"We both need a result so I don't think a draw will do either of us any good," he told Manchester United's official app.

"I think we'll have two teams wanting to win the game.

"You can say in the City game that we were beaten in the end by a better team.

"We've looked at the last five or six games against City that we've played, and I think we've take a step in the right direction with that performance anyway."

United have not scored a goal from open play in 527 minutes but Solskjaer feels a slice of luck is required for United's players to re-find their mojo going forward.

"Yes, of course it does," Solskjaer said of the negative impact United's run of results has had on his players' confidence.

Man Utd squad vs Chelsea revealed as Ander Herrera and Eric Bailly return

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told to let Paul Pogba leave Manchester United by Jamie Carragher

"That's just being a human being. Because you cannot just go into the fridge and take that confidence somehow, like a superficial confidence, you shout more, you scream more, and you puff your chest out - that's just superficial.

"The players get affected by performances and results, and sometimes it can easily go the other way as well. I've been a striker and I couldn't buy a goal, and then suddenly it hit my shin, it goes in and then you're on top of the world again.

"We need to go into the game bouncing and looking forward to the great challenge.

"We're in with a chance, we need to get that goal and get the crowd behind us again because they are unbelievable."
