Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left Manchester United staff ‘in tears’ just weeks after Old Trafford exit

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer caused his former colleagues to break down emotionally just weeks after his Manchester United sacking. A poor run of form saw the Red Devils lose five out of seven Premier League games, with heavy defeats to bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester City adding salt to the wounds.

Debates had sparked on several occasions during his three-year reign at Old Trafford about whether Solskjaer possessed the credentials for the role. Supporters believed finishing second - albeit 12 points behind Manchester City - in 2020-21 built the platform to kick on and clinch that elusive top-flight title.

However, United’s form nosedived and Solskjaer’s spell in the dugout ultimately ended trophyless. Ralf Rangnick would take over as interim boss until the end of the campaign and, as form failed to improve, a season to forget ensued.

Despite his departure, United fans still maintain a special bond with Solskjaer. In truth, it was his exploits as a player - including his famous winner in the 1999 Champions League final - which kept him in the hot seat for so long.

The Athletic have revealed an example of why supporters and those within the club hold the former striker in high regard. Just weeks after his sacking, Solskjaer reportedly bought staff members a luxury Christmas hamper as a token of appreciation for their work at the club.

Several members of staff are said to have wept after receiving their gift - highlighting Solskjaer's popularity at Old Trafford. Supporters - or even critics - never questioned Solskjaer’s attitude or personality throughout his time in charge.

Disapproval was always aimed towards on-field results and his inexperience at managing a big club. One year on, the same report suggests the 49-year-old is eyeing a return to the dugout after spending time out of the game to reflect.
