Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lays out his long-term vision for Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United have to be challenging for honours "every season from now on" after he was appointed as the club's permanent manager.

The Norwegian has signed a three-year deal after his spectacular spell as caretaker boss has taken United back into the battle for a top four finish and to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Solskjaer won it all as a player at United and he will now try and add silverware as a manager, too. United haven't had a serious title challenge since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but Solskjaer wants to see them challenging from as early as next season.

"That’s the demand at Man Utd, the success and striving to improve, winning trophies," he said. "That's another challenge for us, we want to be up there challenging every season from now on."

That's the challenge now for Solskjaer, to build on his success as caretaker over the long-term.

But the former United striker has great belief in the club's potential to return to the glory days and he revealed he asked himself whether he could do the job justice before he was appointed caretaker in the week before Christmas.

"I wouldn't have said yes if I wasn’t looking forward to it and I didn't belief in the club, the potential and in what we’re doing," he told the Manchester United App.

"I feel and I hope that I can do this job justice, that was the first thing I asked myself when I got this job a few months back. Hopefully now I can even improve on it."

The short-term challenge for Solskjaer is to secure a top four finish and United return to action against Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday and then face Wolves at Molineux on Tuesday.

But he's already been discussing long-term plans with Ed Woodward and is excited to put those ideas into action.

"Every day is a challenge and a test. We’ve got Watford and Wolves coming up, the two teams best of the rest this season, so short-term that’s my priority," added Solskjaer.

"Then we have games coming up, the summer transfer window, improving the squad, talking to the players about how we want them to approach next season coming back.

"I’ve been discussing with Ed and the club my ideas for the future, now they’re my decisions to make."
