Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lays down gauntlet to Man Utd stars ahead of crunch Leipzig clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged his Manchester United players to prove their big-game worth by securing their Champions League knockout place.

United will reach the last 16 if they can avoid defeat to RB Leipzig tonight, with Solskjaer confident his players can handle the pressure.

“Knockout games or games like this, that mean you can go through, are big,” said Solskjaer.

“The players are here and are Manchester United players because they have qualities we look for

“I’m sure they will prove the reason why they are here and they will show it.

“The character of the group is getting better and better and we’re looking forward to the game.

“It’s something that we want, games like this. It’s tradition for Manchester United, we never make it easy for ourselves.

“We look at the games, especially Istanbul away, when we could have got three points.

“That’s just the way we do things, we make it hard for ourselves. That's been the way ever since I played here.”

United will be without strikers Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial, both of whom came off injured in the 3-1 win at West Ham, although first-choice keeper David De Gea, who missed that game, is fit.

“David is back and travelling, Edinson and Anthony only have minor niggles, but they won’t be making the trip,” said Solskjaer.

“To get to the last game of the group stage and know you’re in the next round if you win or get a draw, of course it’s an important game.

“But we know it’s going to be a tough game and we need to be at our best to get a good result.”
