Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows Man Utd need new game plan to beat Man City

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Manchester United will need a new plan to beat Pep Guardiola after drawing Manchester City in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

United stunned the Premier League champions with a 2-1 win at the Etihad earlier this month, with pundit Jamie Carragher describing their first 30 minutes as the best performance he had seen by any team against City in recent years.

But Solskjaer is adamant he will have to alter his tactics to come through a two-legged semi-final to reach Wembley.

“We’ve looked at that game and we were very pleased with the result,” he said. “But there are things we need to do so much better.

“In the first 10 minutes you think we’ve got to just hang in there. We need to stamp our authority more and you won’t beat City twice in a row or three times with the same tactics so we’ll have to do something better.

“Pep will have his team fired up.”

And despite Liverpool running away at the top of the Premier League, Solskjaer insists the back-to-back champions remain the team to beat.

“They will be fantastic days in Manchester," he continued. "We do really respect them and as I said after the game, in my opinion, they are the best team in England. They can out-football you. We need to get our game heads on.”

United secured their place in the last four with a 3-0 win against Colchester, courtesy of second-half goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and an own goal from Ryan Jackson.
